Android app to shop Tesco.com groceries
Tesco.com has released public APIs for accessing their grocery online system. These public APIs let developers create applications to shop at Tesco.com from a variety of channels/devices. Tesco.com has released shopping applications for iOS, Windows mobile 7 and Symbian devices. However, an official app for android devices has not yet been released.
I have been thinking about developing an Android app using the public APIs for a while. The first beta version of the app is now ready. In the initial version, the app will have the following features:
- Product catalog browse
- Search (text search, voice search, search by scanning EAN/UPC bar codes)
- Customer login/logout
- Add to basket
- Delivery slot selection
- Checkout
I have tested the application on Nexus One and would be releasing the application to Google Android market place in the next few days. Tesco.com APIs currently do not support user registration, hence the application doesnt have user sign-up option. Users of the app will have to register at Tesco.com. Over the next few weeks, I intend to add additional functionality like displaying current deals, order history and favourites.
If you are a Tesco.com customer and would like to use the application or a help me in testing the application, you can download the beta version of the apk here.
Update 24-Feb-2011: I have added the application to Android market place with name Grocery Shopper. You can download the market place app from here.
Update 26-Mar-2011: Grocery shopper is now on getjar marketplace. You can download from this mirror here.
Update 07-May-2011: Favourites, offers and UI enhancements added to latest version of app.
Update 02-Jun-2011: Fixed issue with payment page during checkout. The earlier version of the app was only showing 01, 02 for credit card expiration months. New version of the app shows all months.

Handy application for grocery shopping
I like your app. My wife has the paid version of the other Tesco app on the Android Market place. Your built in barcode scanner is more reliable and faster
Look forward to you adding deals, order history and favourites. Most of our shopping is built by viewing favourites and we tend to book a delivery slot into the future and the ammend that order many time. So order editting is essential. Looking forward to how your app develops.
Thanks for the feedback. The favourites feature should be ready in a week.
What happened to your application, F1LiveStream. I know there is a free app, new for 2011 from formula1.com, however I much prefer the interface on your app. All session times are visible with the phone in landscape mode.
Blobby, F1LiveStream is back on Android market place now. I suspended it during the off-season.
Good app apart from I Scanned milk and got auctiva yogurt, Scanned mobile phone and got auctiva Yogurt? Scanned Flora margarine and got Flora margarine
Thanks for the feedback. The Yogurt result is a known issue. When a bar code is scanned that is not there in the Tesco database, Tesco is returning Yogurt as the search result.
Cheers,
Kishor
Hi. Like the app so far but the lack of a favorites section makes it unusable. I will have to stick to a web browser for now.
Thanks for the feedback. I am working towards adding the favourites feature. I expect to have the updated version by end of this week.
Used the app to start our weekly shop yesterday. It worked really well picking out from the favourites but we have about 540 in the list and it never finishes loading the full list, so finished off online.
Would be great to be able to add more then one at a time, for things like carrots or bananas.
Thanks for the feedback Alex. The bug related to not loading all favourites is identified. I will send a new version of the app to the marketplace in a couple of hours.
hi, have you considered a tesco app for blackberry
No David. Current focus is on Android and adding new features to this app.
It is a great application for an android customer. Thanks to Tesco.com. Thanks for sharing.
What about a simple app that replicates the clubcard barcode?
Just enter one’s clubcard number, the barcode is automagically generated large enough to be scanned at the tills. Or an app where one can store all store barcodes?
Hi, Thanks for the feedback. I will be adding the clubcard barcode feature soon. Cheers
Useful app for the housewives, they can order at anytime and they don’t have to go outside of their home……
Dude we are in the development of the same kind of android app… we need your help to work on it…
How can I help you on this?
Cheers,
Kishor
